Sparky Goes to Japan and the Philippines

Sparky and Fire Inspector Richard J. Orlando, Brick Township Bureau of Fire Safety was on hand to award Mrs. K. Cedole’s Second Grade Class at Saint Dominic School with an Achievement Award for their dedication to fire safety on February 18, 2011. In October 2010 the Bureau of Fire Safety, Laurelton Fire Company (Station 23) and Sparky held a fire prevention assembly program for the children at Saint Dominic School. Mrs. Cedole wanted to carry that fire prevention message even further with her students so she gave them an assignment which involved mailing a cutout of Sparky as far as they could. The children were very excited about this homework assignment and took great thought into how they could get Sparky the furthest. One student, Ethan Middleton sent his Sparky cutout all the way to a Marine Corps Base in Japan. Another student, Nathan Quintanilla sent his cutout to the Philippines. Every student in the class took great pride in accomplishing this homework assignment.

“The student’s enthusiasm was very impressive”, said Bureau Chief Kevin C. Batzel, “they put a lot of time and thought into this project”. “It is important to remember fire prevention is year round and also world wide and these students accomplished this task”, said Bureau Chief Kevin C. Batzel.
